How to pick a wedding photographer

November 24, 2013

Your wedding day, while one of the most memorable, will be the fastest day of your life. No matter how focused you are on enjoying the moment, your excitement will make the day feel like it was over before it had begun. For this reason, it is imperative that the photographer you choose is able to capture all of the little moments that will become lasting memories. But, how do you ensure that you choose the right photographer? Here is some advice to consider.

1. Do they “see the world” as you do?

No, you don’t have to sit down and have a philosophical conversation with your prospective photographer, but you do need to make sure that you are on the same page in terms of what perspective your photographs are coming from. Are you a fan of posed photos, or do you prefer candid shots where the subjects are not even aware that they are being photographed? Many people have a fixed idea about what photography is. Have this discussions with your photographer so as not to make the mistake of assuming that they have your same vision.

2. How much is enough?

Are you going to want your photographer with you from the moment you start your hair and makeup, or do you want him/her to focus on the main parts of the wedding? These options go hand-in-hand with cost, so make sure you have a good idea of which parts of your day you want documented. This is also a good time to consider where the photographer will be at what time. For instance, if the girls are getting ready at the same time as the guys, how will you decide where the photographer needs to be? Also, explore how many photos the photographer takes. Does he/she take a minimalist approach where you will only have a few quality photos to select from, or will there be a sizable portfolio that you will be responsible for sifting through to find the prints you want?

3. How skilled are they at their craft?

Do your research. No, seriously, do your research. You will not regret a second of your time that you spend in search of the perfect photographer. Look at portfolios, ask around to your friends, attend wedding shows, hold interviews… do whatever it takes to feel comfortable with and confident in your photographer. Make sure you are well-informed about the cost of the photographer up front.
