Theme Wedding Guidelines

The choice to have a themed wedding is very personal and there are a lot of factors that can help filter this decision. It is a delicate choice because you want your theme to represent you as a couple, without coming off as cheesy. Below are some guidelines to keep in mind if you are considering a themed wedding.

Venue

The venue is a huge factor because it will largely dictate what your possibilities are. Theme weddings can be arduous if you do not ensure that the atmosphere of the venue is cohesive with the theme. Though this seems restricting, there is actually a lot of room for creativity; theme weddings give you a great excuse to think outside of the box. Look at your venue as the setting for your wedding, just as you would a movie or a play, and go from there.

Personality

The point of a theme is to add personality to your wedding. But, it can be a little daunting to narrow down just how to represent your interests as a couple. The best place to start is to envision your reception. What are people wearing? Are they partying all night long? Are they sipping water or wine? What will the most popular activity be? Talking? Dancing? Once you can start to see how you want the reception to play out, you can work backwards and start to create a theme. You also want to consider your interests as a couple to see what you can incorporate. Are you outdoorsy? Quirky? Hipster? Classic? Try writing down some of your favorite attributes and see what you come up with.

Balance

One of the biggest dissuasions from pursuing a themed wedding is the possibility of coming off cheesy. The secret to avoid this is to make sure there is a fine balance between the theme you choose and what items/decorations are used to represent it. It is often very tempting to get mentally set on a theme and to then go about purchasing any and all materials that pertain to it. But, it is much more impactful to have a few key pieces that make a statement rather than just a bunch of small nick-knacks. For example, if you want a circus themed wedding, it will look much more tasteful to have a mock ferris wheel than a plethora of odds and ends from the dollar store that you bought just because it fit the theme. If you can agree on one or two impressive pieces, it will make the planning process easier because you will alleviate the stress of constantly picking up odds and ends to go with your theme. It will also create an elegant atmosphere.
