Wedding cake is such a fun and unique way to express the style of each and every couple that we have the pleasure of working with! We have had the pleasure of working along side wedding cake designer and artist, Moriah Michelle with Wildflower Cakes. She is passionate, eager and so talented at what she does. Continue reading to find out more information about all the wonderful designs and tastings she has to offer to you!

1. KKWE: When did you start your business and what motivated you to do so?

Moriah Michelle: I started Wildflower Cakes 2.5 years ago when I moved to Denver from New York City. I had previously been working as a pastry chef in fine dining restaurants for most of my culinary career and then transitioned into cake design for my last three years in New York. I attended art school growing up, and later fell in love with pastry and sculpting so cake design was a natural fit for me.

2. KKWE: What would you consider your greatest professional achievement in the past year?

Moriah Michelle: The past two years here in Colorado have been a whirlwind. I have delivered cakes all over the state, and one of my achievements that has very exciting is seeing my work published both in print and on wedding blogs. It’s such a thrill and I feel so blessed to get to work on these projects with so many talented people.

3. KKWE: What separates you from your competition? What can you offer that no one else can?

Moriah Michelle: I get a lot of great feedback from planners and clients on my artistic approach, unique designs, and design process. I like to include cake sketches in my proposals. They are not always necessary, but I think it adds a nice touch.

4. KKWE: When you’re working on a wedding or event, how do you usually interact with the other vendors? What is your experience working with wedding planners?

Moriah Michelle: I love working with couples who have wedding planners. Planners always have these great design inspiration boards that really help set the mood and tone of the clients wedding. If I know a potential client has a wedding planner, I’ll reach out to them for the mood board ahead of our tasting to help me prepare and to get the ball rolling on cake design ideas. Then at the tasting we will sample flavors and start the design process. If a couple knows they want fresh flowers on their cake the planner will connect me with the florist to discuss what flowers will hold up best.

5. KKWE: How would you describe your style or aesthetic?

Moriah Michelle: My style is very eclectic, but I tend to lean towards contemporary design with vintage accents.

6. KKWE: What or who inspires you in life and in your work?

Moriah Michelle: Personally I find a lot of inspiration in textiles, and art work. I love the paintings of Degas, Dali, and Basquiat. Anytime I’m traveling I’ll go to a few museums or galleries in the area and photograph things that catch my eye. Even if it’s a just a color palate I like I’ll snap a picture of it and use that as inspiration when I’m coloring my sugar flowers.

When it comes to designing for a specific couple I would have to say my biggest work inspiration comes from the clients themselves. After all I’m designing for them and their big day!

7. KKWE: How would you describe your creative process?

Moriah Michelle: The process starts with the clients’ design inspiration. Their venue, color palette, aesthetic and any details they have chosen serve as the foundation, and my job is to design a cake that will fit seamlessly into their theme. Once I have an idea of the couple’s wedding style we set up a tasting to try flavors and nail down the cake design.

8. KKWE: What’s your favorite way to unwind?

Moriah Michelle: I love taking really long bubble baths with a big ol’ glass of red wine. I’m really into healing salts and oils so I’ll mix the perfect concoction,  fill my bathroom with candles, and just soak and relax for an hour or two.

I also really like to go on hikes after cake deliveries. Most of my weddings take place in the mountains, so if it’s not too late I’ll set out on a trail to clear my head.

9. KKWE: If you weren’t a Caterer, what would you want to do?

Moriah Michelle: If I weren’t a cake decorator I would be a horticulturist. I grew up gardening with my grandmother, and it’s a passion I share with my mother in law. Something that is still on my bucket list is to get a horticultural certificate from the New York Botanic Gardens.
